Friday Dance Dose

a freeform dance
+embodiment practice

Friday Dance Dose, founded in 2021 by Leita Schiemann and joined in collaboration with Ryan Roman in 2022, offers a transformative freeform dance experience held with intention, love, and presence. We are a welcoming and inclusive space for all.

Facilitated and DJ’d on alternating-ish weeks by Leita and Ryan, and occasionally accompanied by guest artists, this is more than just dance—it's an embodiment practice—an invitation to move freely, express authentically, and deepen your connection with your body, integrating yourself more wholly.

Dance is medicine. Take your measure. Get your dose.

the dance experience

The music is an intuitively curated, ever-evolving mix, dj'd by our facilitators to support this practice.

We gather to immerse in the medicine of movement, with presence, feeling fully alive and allowing whatever needs to move— to MOVE!

Together, we create a powerful, magical cauldron of healing that ripples far beyond the dance floor.

how to dance?

There are no steps to follow and no right or wrong way to move—your body leads the way. You are invited to be with what is, honoring your own experience moment by moment.

✨ Dance wildly or be still or somewhere in between
✨ Dance alone or with others (with consent)
✨ Stay in one spot or move through the space
✨ Whatever you come with and whatever arises– let it move through your body with your movements. Bring your joy, resistance, release, expansion, grief, awkwardness, sillyness, shyness, bold, courage, unsure, confident... you get the drift.. You are welcome here with your truth.

Facilitator verbal cues are suggestions to support embodiment, but you are your ultimate authority.

guidelines + etiquette

These agreements aren’t about restriction, but about creating the conditions that support our sense of safety and freedom in the container so that we can drop deeper into the dance together.

  • Newcomers are welcome. Open to all levels.

  • Ages 18+

  • Doors close 20 minutes after the start of each class to create a safe, held container.

  • Enter the journey space in silence.

  • Bring enough water for the full session, and as few personal belongings as possible.

  • The dance floor is a talk-free zone. If you need to speak, first consider and respect another’s dance. If it’s truly important, please step outside.

  • This is a drug and alcohol-free space.

  • Phones off or on silent — no photography, video, or phone use. This supports everyone’s ability to feel safe in a practice that can bring up vulnerability.

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable to move in.

  • Dance barefoot or in clean, indoor-only shoes. If wearing socks, please be mindful of slipping.

  • No gum, please.

Respect for Senses & Container

  • Be considerate of others’ ears, noses, and nervous systems.

  • Scents: deodorant is encouraged; perfume and essential oils are not.

  • Please refrain from wearing clothing or jewelry that makes sound or light up. Flow toys (flags, hoops, etc.) and instruments are to be left at home.

  • Keep clapping, stomping, and cheering sounds to a minimum. They can sometimes support group energy, and sometimes distract from the practice of embodiment.

Consent & Boundaries

  • Consent and boundaries are often communicated through body language or energy — but sometimes they are not understood.

  • Give a clear gesture of NO (such as prayer hands or hands across your chest) or even say the word NO if needed.

Contact Improv in Our Practice
(Contact Improvisation is a dance form that explores shared weight, touch, and improvisation with 2 or more people. While C.I. is a wonderful practice, this is not a Contact Improv jam.)

  • Please limit the portion of your dance you spend in Contact Improv.

  • Please keep one body part on the ground at all times. For safety reasons- in this space, don't pick others up.

  • Be mindful of how much space your combined dance is occupying. Keep it to the perimeter of the space if you find you are taking up a lot of central space for solo dancers to move.

  • Always move with consent and awareness of others.
