What this is...

A FREEFORM DANCE + EMBODIMENT PRACTICE

Founded in 2021 by Leita Schiemann and joined in collaboration with Ryan Roman in 2022, Friday Dance Dose offers a welcoming and inclusive freeform dance experience held with intention, love, and presence.

We recognize that not all bodies move through the world with the same experience of safety and belonging. We are committed to cultivating a space where 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC community members feel welcomed, respected, and supported in showing up authentically.

Newcomers are welcome. No experience is necessary.

Facilitated and DJ'd on alternating-ish weeks by Leita and Ryan, and occasionally accompanied by guest artists, this is more than just dance — it is an embodiment practice. An invitation to move freely, express authentically, and deepen your connection with your body.

The music is an intuitively curated, ever-evolving mix that supports this practice and invites us to immerse in the medicine of movement.

Dance is medicine.

Take your measure. Get your dose.

HOW TO DANCE

There are no steps to follow and no right or wrong way to move. Your body leads the way.

You are invited to:

  • Dance wildly, be still, or anything in between.

  • Dance alone or with others (with consent).

  • Stay in one spot or move through the room.

  • Welcome whatever arises. You are welcome here with your truth.

Facilitator verbal cues are invitations, but you are your ultimate authority.

COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS
  • Ages 18+

  • Doors close 20 minutes after the start of class.

  • Bring enough water and as few personal belongings as possible.

  • Enter the space in silence.

  • The dance floor is a talk-free zone.

  • This is a sober space. Please do not attend under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • Phones off or on silent. No photography, video, or phone use.

  • Wear comfortable clothing and dance barefoot or in clean, indoor-only shoes.

Respect for the Shared Space

Please be mindful of others' ears, noses, and nervous systems.

  • Deodorant is encouraged; strong perfumes and essential oils are not.

  • Please leave flow toys, instruments, and sound-making or light-up accessories at home.

  • Keep clapping, stomping, and cheering sounds to a minimum.

CONSENT & BOUNDARIES
  • Consent and boundaries are foundational to this practice.

  • Please honor both your own boundaries and those of others. If necessary, offer a clear gesture of "no" — such as prayer hands or crossing your hands over your chest — or simply saying "no".

  • Friday Dance Dose has zero tolerance for aggressive behavior, sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination or abuse. Anyone who engages in such conduct may be asked to leave immediately and may not be permitted to return.

CONTACT IMPROV IN OUR PRACTICE

While Contact Improvisation is a beautiful practice, Friday Dance Dose is not a Contact Improv jam.

Please:

  • Limit the amount of time spent in Contact Improvisation.

  • Keep one body part on the ground at all times.

  • Do not lift others.

  • Be mindful of the space your dance occupies.

  • Move with awareness and consent.

music

We are so grateful to all the musicians whose music we share at Friday Dance Dose! Sometimes, we record our dj sets and post them on SoundCloud.

Feel free to reach out to us if there's a song you are looking for from a particular night if it is not on SoundCloud. We are happy to share music.
